With the amazing news that gay marriage has become legalized in three more states in the US this week, including Washington, Maine and Maryland, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ video for Same Love, showing one man’s journey of coming out, couldn’t have arrived at a better time.
In Same Love, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis put story telling to music, talking about everything from parents to religion to laws and how they all affect one’s view of themselves as gay. Rapping the lines “When kids aren’t walking around the hallway, plagued by pain in their heart from a world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are. And a certificate on paper ain’t gonna solve it all, but it’s a damn good place to start” the duo dream of a world when sexual orientation no longer defines individuals.
Mary Lambert’s addition to the song with her sweet chorus keeps the heavy subject matter accessible to a wider audience, which is especially important for not only an amazing song, but one with a message that cannot be silenced.
