The end is near! Four songwriters are left!
Let’s take a look at our remaining contenders, shall we? Last week Brian and Scotty were tied with wins, but with Brian now kicked off Scotty is the front-runner. Following close behind him is the almighty and fierce Sonyae who’s lyrics and swag have always served her well. Next up is Nick who is a dick – but his catchy chorus chaos has carried him through. Last is underdog Jes who’s ready to prove that she’s more than just a sweet indie girl with angsty songs!
One more challenge stands between them and the finale. Let’s do this.
This week it’s all pop. The songwriters must write a top 40 hit hook that doesn’t fizzle. And who better to guest judge some perfect pop than Perez Hilton!?
The gang writes up their poppy hooks and shows the king of scandal what they got! Jes writes “So See Through” which Perez thinks isn’t fun enough. He cringes at Scotty’s “D.J. Have My Babies” but digs the melody. On the flip side Sonyae’s “Exit” has a great concept but is in need of a neater melody. Nick writes “Boom Boom” about the competition, which ends up sounding like an old, confusing Hanson song.
Jewel and Perez gossip it up and decide the winning hook order is Nick in fourth, Jes in third, Sonyae in second, and Scotty taking first.
No teams are picked, as this week the songwriters shall be writing ALONE! Dun dun duuuuun! Now we all know how much Jewel loves a twist, and she reveals that Perez will not be the guest judge deciding the winner. Who is this all powerful mystery judge?
Cheerleaders! High school kids! Young folk! They alone shall pick this week’s winner! Everyone is so excited!
With that, the songwriters are given a day and a backing track. They must write the lyrics and melody. Go team go!
Nick switches up his concept with “First Call” – which is much less malicious. Scotty too decides his concept needs some tweaking, and turns “D.J. Have My Babies” into a song about the last moment on Earth being a dance party. Party? All the while, Jes tries to turn her song into something more uplifting.
Midway through, Kara shows up! Surprise! She’s come to see how everyone is doing and give advice. How Tim Gunn of her! Scotty and Jes need to clean up their lyrics, Nick has gotta tighten up his hooks, and Sonyae should shine up her melody. Make it work people!
Inspired by Kara’s words of wisdom, everyone polishes and perfects their pop tunes. Nick even switches up his concept again turning “First Call” into “My Mistake”. It’s about a girl who was a mistake that he’d make again! Awe! It’s nice to see Nick writing from his heart.
Ding ding ding! What’s that? The bell! Time to go back to school! Acne, split ends, and… Taio Cruz?
Yep! He’s helping judge! Now let’s see what pops! Nick’s “My Mistake” is the first to get the kids dancing. “So See Through” by Jes is more filled with teens clapping along and Kara smiling.
Kara even sings along to Sonyae’s “Exit” which got the auditorium pointing to the nearest exit signs (which if you think about it is quite good for fire safety)! Last is Scotty’s “World’s Last Spin” which had everyone up on their feet! This is so much fun you guys!
Voting time! Who will become class president!? Apparently Sonyae! Her song “Exit” got the most votes! Congrats Miss. Prom Queen!
Now time to figure out who must go. Needless to say, everyone gave it their all this week – which doesn’t make the judges’ jobs easy. They’re proud of Scotty! He did good! They’re also pleased with Nick, but he needed to work on his melody more. Jes also stepped it up, but it was very young. So who moves on to the final?
Scotty is safe! So is Jes! The leader and the underdog! Yay! This of course means that Nick is going home. Poor guy. Just as he was getting into his stride! You had a good fight Nick! We wont forget your snarls and brawls.
Next week? Scotty is the last man standing! Jes and Sonyae are the last women ready to rock! It’s le finale ladies and gents! THIS IS IT!
Episode 6 and many a songwriter has hit the road. Now is when things get real. One miss and that could be it. Eek! Let’s see what happens this week!
The songwriters are woken by some morning Jewel mail, but it’s Kara that meets the gang at the promenade. She’s kinda scary, right? Today it’s her, not Jewel, telling them what’s up.
This week’s hook challenge is all about RISK! No, not the game, but putting yourself on the line – and how better to explore risk then to make the songwriters busk! Instead of the judges picking the hook winners, the three songwriters with the most money busked win! It’s up to the random passers by!
Nick and Jackie have experience busking so they get right to work, while Sonyae is scared, as she doesn’t have any instrument other than her voice. Good thing you got immunity girl!
Jackie’s experience seems to pay off as right of the bat she draws quite the crowd with her hook “Say It Back”. Maybe it’s her hat. Why are you wearing a hat in that warm weather Jackie?
Nick’s experience on the other hand? Not really paying off. He doesn’t get any money and starts to yell sing. Ack.
Jes, Scotty, Brian, and Sonyae just seem to be doing okay, while Johnny gets everyone clapping along to his hook “Betting My Life”. Oh Johnny, is it any surprise that the crowd caved to your adorableness?
Kara counts the money and Jes ends up grabbing third! We’re surprised too Jes!
In second it’s no surprise Johnny, and first is Jackie with her experience and great concept! The winners choose their teams with Nick not getting picked last for once! Sneaky Jes didn’t want Miss. Immunity on her team. Fair enough. Smart move! Plus Nick seems happy to be liked for once. Awe!
The twist of the week? The songs must be written in different styles! We have…
Team Reggae: Johnny and Brian
Team Pop: Jes and Nick
and Team Country: Jackie, Scotty, and Sonyae
Uh… Country? Really? When you have Scotty and Sonyae? Not to mention one of your judges is JEWEL!? Uh oh. Well. Good luck?
Brian and Johnny bro out, reggae it up mon, and talk lots about feelings. Brian wants to know all the juicy gossip of the song and discuss it, while Johnny just wants to get going. Then Brian talks about an old man with dice? And wants to make it the bridge of the song? Johnny’s like “UHHHHHHH….” But then he’s like “OKAY! SURE!”
Team Country has some conflict which is a tad surprising. We all know that Jackie can be hard to work with but didn’t Scotty write his love hook last week about waiting to hear “I love you” said back? Which is basically what Jackie’s song is about. So they should be on the same songwriting page…but not so much. Scotty is scared of this all becoming a “cluster – you know what” but is also quite confident in the choice of country. Hm. We’ll see.
And Team Pop? They’re just getting along swimmingly! Nick is bringing out the pop in Jes and they both connect with the theme of saving yourself. Or as Nick puts it “Jess is very talented when she’s working with Nick!” Some things never change.
Songwriting done! Performance day! Everyone gets ready in his or her own way!
While Sonyae preps her assets…
Who’s ready for some judging?! This week’s guest judge has written Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and “California Girls” – it’s Bonnie McKee!
Team Pop is up first! Pressure is on with a pop superstar songwriter in the room! “Save Yourself” is good, but not as poppin’ as it could be. Still, it’s nice to see Jes come out of her shell! Work it girl.
Team Reggae now! “Betting Your Life” is jammin mon! Still not sure about the whole old man dice… but still jamming!
Last is Team Country! Jackie pulls out the twang (perhaps too much twang) for “Say It Back”. Nick yawns and admits that he’ll “never say it back!” Yikes!
The judges discuss and it’s Team Reggae for the win! How many wins is that for Johnny now? Like… so many! The judges dug the old man metaphor and felt like they were on an island!
Team Pop comes in second as the lyrics weren’t pop simple enough and lacked hooky hooks. Nick also gets called out for being all talk but no results yet.
This means of course that Team Country is in the bottom. I told you so Scotty! Bah! Jewel is your judge! You should know better! Play to your strengths yo! Because Sonyae has immunity (lucky her) it’s Jackie vs Scotty and THINGS ARE INTENSSSEEEE! Jackie is saying she wrote stuff that Scotty is saying he wrote! Yells! Loud voices! Ah!
The judges talk some more and decide that Jackie’s time has come. But the judges believe in her! So we leave on a happy note! Awe. I’ll miss your sass Jackie. Who will talk non-stop now and stir up drama? Bye Jackie! Good luck!
Next week: The songwriters must-DAYYYUUM NO! JEWEL IS BACK ALREADY AND SONGWRITING STARTS AGAIN NOW!
It’s week five and there’s eight songwriters left. This week starts off with some Tyra – I mean Jewel mail!
The gang head over to a pretty ‘lil park and are greeted by Jewel and this week’s guest judge Ryan Tedder.
Let’s hope this week no one will need to apologize! Because it’s tooooo laaaaaateeee! Get it? Cus Ryan Tedder wrote that! Too corny? Well deal with it! It’s love song week yo! Bring on the cheesy romance!
Everyone is getting real personal with this challenge! That’s love for yah! Johnny has “plenty of insper-aish”, what with Jes being his new boo.
Unfortunately for Johnny his hook is too “John Mayer-ish” according to Ryan Tedder. The winners of the hook challenge end up being Jes with her song about Johnny in 3rd, Nick’s song about his ex in 2nd, and Sonyae taking 1st with her concept of loving someone to life.
As the winner of this week’s hook challenge, Sonyae wins an extra special prize – she gets to pick ALL OF THE TEAMS! SO MUCH POWER! MUAHAHAHA!
So what does Sonyae create?
The Dream Team: Sonyae, Brian and Scotty
Team Nick’s Nightmare: Nick, Johnny and Jackie
The Team of Two: Jes and Melissa
Team Nightmare writes a back a forth duet with multiple characters. It’s kinda complicated but also kinda neat! While Nick might not love working with Jackie, he tries to be on his best behavior for the sake of the song.
The Dream Team on the other hand, collaborate together naturally and right from the start lay down some great tracks! Sonyae is loving her melody master Scotty and her guitar guru Brian.
As for the Team of Two? Jes does all of the writing. Jes gets sick. And Melissa doesn’t seem to really do anything…
TWIST TIME! As always Jewel has got another surprise! The winning team gets immunity! AHHHH! Pressure is on.
Judging day! Jes feels better! Johnny’s excited! Scotty and Brian want Sonyae to wear red? Sonyae doesn’t. So yeah. Time to be judged!
First up is the Dream Team with “Love Me To Life” which is quite the jam!
Next is Team Nightmare with “Stuck In Your Head” which has two guitars and the signature Nick rock growl.
Last is the Team of Two with “It’s You” which is cute! Very cute!
The judges discuss and for once the waiting room is filled with laughs rather than yells! The gang debate whose the craziest! Giggles! Yay!
The smiles can only last so long though – back to judging! Back to drama! Team Nightmare and Dream Team take the top two spots. The judges are torn about “Stuck In My Head” and end up picking “Love Me To Life” as the winner. And the winner of winners is Sonyae! Who can deny it?! This was her week!
On the flipside “It’s You” is the losing song, which means it’s between Melissa and Jes for who gets kicked off. Eek! Things are intense! Jes’s lyrics were weak and being sick is no excuse. That being said, Melissa didn’t really do… anything? Both girls try to defend themselves but it’s Melissa who sasses back at Kara! Not a good idea Melissa! The judges discuss more and Jes sums up the judging…
Yep. What Jes said.
Between the person who wrote it all (but not so good) and the person who wrote nothing – Melissa gets kicked off! Fair enough. We’ll miss your cute craziness Melissa, but next time write some lyrics girl!
Next week: Busking! Taking it to da streets! Can’t wait!
“Good morning everybody, it’s time to write hits!” Yes Jackie. Yes indeed. Episode three of Platinum Hit and we’re up and rolling.
Ten left! Johnny is feeling the emptiness as Blessing and Nevin were his roommates and now they’re kicked off. Maybe that room is cursed! Or maybe it’s just bad luck. Either way, it’s time for this week’s challenge!
Kara Dioguardi (aka that American Idol judge who is not Paula Abdul) joins Jewel for the hook challenge judging. This week? It’s all about the road trip baby!
Everyone gets postcards with one word on it they muuuuuust use in the chorus. All the words are roadtrippy like “ROAD” and “WHEELS” – which makes Jackie feel like she’s going to cry and Nick feel annoyed by Jackie.
Kara sets him straight being all “You are ALWAYS in a songwriting session! Life is a songwriting session!!!!” You tell him Kara!
The gang write their hooks and all are feeling pretty inspired – save for Amber who has never been on a road trip before. Meanwhile, Scotty decides to go honky-tonk! This should be interesting!
And it is! All the hooks this week are pretty good! Very emotional! But of course Nick is still Nick and he thinks Jackie sounds like the Cookie Monster. I don’t understand you Nick! Jackie has a very nice raspy voice! I like it!
You know what else I like? That Jes is all googly eyed for Johnny and Johnny has a heart on for Jes! So cute!
I guess their mushy feelings for each other helped their songwriting because both Jes and Johnny make the top 3 alongside Jackie. Johnny gets first place meaning that this week he gets to pick his entire team – WHAAAAAA? Yes. Intense.
Teams are picked and Nick gets picked last. Poor lil guy. While he can be a biiiit much, it’s true that his team hasn’t lost yet! Maybe he’s like an annoying good luck charm?
Either way, the teams this week are…
TEAM BOYZ: Johnny, Brian Elvis, and Scotty
TEAM GURLZ: Jes, Melissa, and Amber
And TEAM CO-ED: Jackie, Karen, Sonyae, and Nick
Jewel surprises the gang and is all “ROAAAAAD TRRRIPPP!!!” It’s like Crossroads with Britney Spears up in here yo!
Here’s what goes down on their trip…
- We learn that Jes sang backup for Enrique Iglesias!
- They stay in the most prestigious 1 star motel ever
- Melissa tells us about how she went to Stanford and she knows how to spell
- Team Boyz trys to get Johnny to talk about feelings
Oh and they write music of course!
Team Boyz and Team Gurlz are golden! The only weak link in Team Co-Ed seems to be Karen’s clichés. Despite differences Jackie, Nick and Sonyae are song writing very well together! Yay! Friendship!
All the teams head back to the studio and Jes and Johnny hangout at his apartment/residence/place the contestants have to stay at. This is kinda the first time we see anyone outside of the studio or a challenge! It’s adorable! J&J 4EVER OMG!
Of course the cuteness can’t last forever and it’s judging time! This round featuring Natasha Bedingfield!
Team Co-Ed sing “Road Is Where My Heart Is”. It’s very “GO GET UP YOU CAN DO IT YAY!” Team Gurlz sing “ Home For Me” and it’s very “girl-emotions-piano-lovely-I’m-gonna-go-eat-ice-cream-and-cry-go-girl-power!” Last but not least Team Boyz sing “Going Where I Need To Be” which is very “happy-summer-beaches” and I like it.
The judges deliberate and THIS HAPPENS! I want to see the Brian, Elvis and Sonyae love story!
Okay back to judging! Team Boyz wins! They loved it! Team Gurlz gets second place! Natasha felt like crying! Woo hoo! Team Co-Ed looses! Boo!
So much for my Nick is a lucky charm theory. He’s not happy about loosing for the first time, but the judges boots his ego by complimenting him on his guitar-ness. The judges also dig Sonaye’s line about her love compass. Karen’s clichés come up as a problem again and the judges don’t understand why Jackie doesn’t believe in losing sleep.
In the end its Karen’s clichés that come back to haunt her and gets the southern sweetheart kicked off. Awe! Tears! Even Nick stops being mean and gets emotional! Goodbye Karen! We’ll miss your very loud but passionate hook writing!
Next week: Rapping, more loving between J&J and DRAMA!
