Jason Derulo takes a surprisingly dark turn in his video for The Other Side, the first single from the singer’s upcoming third studio album. Derulo was poised to take over the pop world with his first headlining tour in 2012 when a serious injury sidelined the singer. While rehearsing for the tour, Jason, a trained dancer, fractured a vertebrae in his neck, an injury that could have resulted in paralysis or death. Showing that he’s fully recuperated, Derulo’s new video heavily features dance sequences, with Jason even standing on his head for a split second. That part made me nervous.

The sexually charged video shows Derulo and his love interest taking their relationship to the next level of ‘the other side’. Straying from the upbeat energy of the song, the couple show what happens when friendship turns to love and then to hate.

Debuting his first song in over a year with The Other Side, Jason was on Ryan Seacrest’s morning show earlier this month to discuss the dance heavy track, produced by Ammo and Dr. Luke. The upbeat song’s lyric focus on a pair of friends becoming lovers, a possible homage to Derulo’s longtime girlfriend, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks.

Derulo, who was joined at the radio station by Sparks, told Seacrest “you know if you have a best friend there’s nothing better than having that same person be your lover as well. And it only takes that one kiss…that one moment, that one drink, that can change everything and change things to the other side.”

Borrowing the exact same intro from Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, which was also produced by Dr. Luke, The Other Side quickly becomes all Derulo, showing off the singer’s impressive falsetto and ability to make a catching pop song with substance.

Derulo’s third studio album is set to drop this September.
