Rihanna has released the much anticipated video for Diamonds, her first single from Unapologetic, the pop star’s seventh studio album in seven years. Taking on a new sound, Rihanna digs deep in the emotional ballad, singing about self love and confidence.
The intensity and passion of Diamonds is matched in the song’s visuals, with Rihanna wandering through a number of dream sequences, including walking in the desert while wild horses surround her, floating in an endless sea of water, and later finding herself in the middle of a civil war in an urban sprawl.
In a clip that runs throughout the video, Rihanna is being pulled away from the arms of her lover as she clings to his forearms, which look extremely similar to the tattooed limbs of Rihanna’s ex and rumoured reunited boyfriend Chris Brown. Brown also appears on the new album in the track Nobodies Business.
Rihanna teamed up with video director Anthony Mandler, who has worked with the singer on her almost every music video she’s made. Mandler has again worked his magic on bringing another emotional performance out of Rihanna, reminiscent of their work together on videos like Man Down and Unfaithful. Drawing on the album artwork for the single Diamonds, the video begins with Mandler showing a clip of Rihanna rolling a cigarette made of diamonds and blowing smoke.
Rihanna’s latest album Unapologetic is due out November 19. Check out the video for Diamonds below.
