MuchMore.ca Concert Review: A Camp
Date: June 1, 09
Location: Mod Club, Toronto, ON
Author: Zachary Pearse
This week, the band A CAMP played an amazing show at the Mod Club in support of their sophomore album “Colonia“. The band consists of Nina Persson (front woman of The Cardigans), her husband Nathan Larsson (of Shudder To Think), and Niclas Frisk (from Atomic Swing).
Their 16 song set-list consisted of almost an even mix of material from the new disc and their 2001 debut album “A CAMP“. There was a great variety of both up-tempo tracks and beautiful ballads in which Nina really showcased her gorgeous and melodic vocal talents. It was one of those live performances that sounded just like you could be listening to the CD in your living room, but with 10X the emotion! Nina performed quite theatrically which is something I haven’t seen her do live while performing with The Cardigans.
A CAMP also performed two cover songs, “I’ve Done It Again” by Grace Jones and “Boys Keep Swinging” by David Bowie. These two songs as well as a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Us And Them” will be released as an EP called “Covers” which will be available as a First Spin on MuchMore.ca starting June 9th now!.
Highlights from the show were Niclas’s guitar intro into the beautiful Colonia track “Chinatown“, and Nina bringing opener Gentleman Reg on stage to perform Niclas’s part in the duet “Golden Teeth And Silver Medals”. After the show, the band hung out at the merch table for give autographs and take photos with their fans which is something that you just don’t see that much anymore. It was a great night!

Hi. I was at the A Camp concert and just wanted to point out that the guitar solo by Niclas before Chinatown was the theme from Blade Runner. I didn’t pick it up until a few minutes into it.
During the autograph meet and greet I asked him if it was Blade Runner and he was thrilled that someone recognized the theme. He told me I was the first person who’d mentioned it to him. (I found that hard to believe). And since Vangelis’ original theme was played just before the band came out, I had a very good clue that was what he was playing in the solo. Niclas told me he wanted to do it in the style of RUSH. He actually reached out and shook my hand, he was so happy someone noticed it. I am still a bit overwhelmed about getting my cd signed by all three of them. I’d seen them walking along College St. at 7:30p.m. and missed the opportunity as they went into the tour bus.
Definitely a Wow concert.
