No Doubt In Sixty

No Doubt In Sixty

A funny thing happened on the way to NYC to interview No Doubt. I was actually in St. John’s enjoying some time off in my homeland when I got the call, so I had to grab a 6am flight (up at 3am), clear Customs in Montreal, and make it to NYC for my 3:00pm interview time. Sounds easy enough right? Really, the only thing I thought might be an issue was the fact that there is an hour and a half time difference between home and the Big Apple so worst case scenario I’d be tired, but nothing the adrenaline of a 45 minute chat with No Doubt couldn’t fix. The adrenaline however came much sooner. In Montreal I was detained at Customs for about an hour because there is apparently another Canadian Matt Wells with the same date of birth, who looks like me, and is into some pretty criminal shit. To be honest I’ve encountered this problem before while crossing borders with my old band but it hasn’t happened in like 10 years. The issue this time was my new passport didn’t have my middle name (Alexander) which has helped distinguish me from evil Matt Wells in the past. So there I was, sitting in one of those interrogation rooms knowing I hadn’t done anything wrong but still nervous as if I had, and to make things worse my choice of no socks and a pair of black Vans full of baby powder to keep my toe toes fresh for a day of travelling was now starting to look like I was hiding some strange white powder in my shoes. So, after a lot of fact checking, after me removing my shirt to show what tattoos I have (and don’t have), and with only minutes to catch my connecting flight, I suggested that they Google me (hey I was desperate)….but it still wasn’t good enough. Then the officer asked me if I had a middle initial , I showed him my driver’s license which proved I was not the evil Matt Wells and I barley caught my flight to No Doubt a little frazzled but with extremely fresh feet.

It’s fitting that I had such a large obstacle in the way of chatting with this band because as successful as No Doubt has been, it hasn’t t come easy. They have been the ultimate outsiders constantly fighting their way in; their ska and dancehall vibe pop music has survived the wrath of grunge and boy bands while the band itself has survived the break up of two of its members and the death of an original No Doubter. This is a new phase for them, they have grown up together and reached the heights of musical fame and success and now have kids and families. After being away for 10 years No Doubt are attempting to reconnect with a new music world that has things like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. This is the fascinating story of a band that seems to fit in by not fitting in and who have survived everything that has been thrown at them, and not even the evil Matt Wells could stop them from telling it.
