The last time I interviewed Alanis Morrisette it was kind of uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s me, sometimes it’s them, and most times it’s a combination of both. The reality of that specific time is that Alanis was promoting her album “Flavors of Entanglement” which was filled with thoughts and emotions about her very public relationship/engagement/break-up with Ryan Reynolds, and aside from being a promotion machine at the time, she was also a human being who I can only assume was being asked a lot of questions that were affecting her vibe. Interviews for me are just conversations with people and if I were to walk into a bar for a blind date with a person who was in the middle of an emotionally trying time, it would probably be a strained conversation. I don’t buy the argument that part of a celebrity’s job is to deal with those kinds of personal questions just by virtue of being in the public eye. Even someone like Alanis who is so honest in her music should still be afforded a certain amount of respect simply because she is a human, who has human emotions, just like you and I.
This time around, things were different. Alanis is in a different place in her life now with a husband and a young son, and I think I’m a better interviewer than I was in 2008 which all added up to a really enjoyable second (not so blind) date on In Sixty. She is feeling liberated with a new album that, for the first time, has been released on her own record label which is symbolic of the ending of one of her most abusive relationships as she described it to me …..the one with Maverick Records. Alanis Morrissette’s story is incredible and one of those “be careful what you wish for” steps into the music world. From her time as a teenage pop princess in Canada to the world wide phenomenon that was “Jagged Little Pill” to her brand new album, music has healed her and has also brought through the depths of depression when it made were fantastically famous, all of which we chatted about. People ask me all the time which interviews have been my favorite, or which ones didn’t go so well, and now Alanis Morrisette is in both of those categories. Enjoy.
