Adele @ Massey Hall

043009-adele

I start this review with a sigh. Her preshow music was “Single Ladies”, which once again reinforces that Beyonce is Queen of the world… but as soon as Adele walked on the stage the night was hers.

Solange for MJ?

This is just a rumour, but it was on the internet so it must be true right? Well, in our Michael Jackson comeback watch, the word is that he has found his opening act, and it is none other than Solange Knowles, Beyonces not-so-famous baby sister. On celebrity site BOSSIP (a pure guilty pleasure here at MuchMore) a ‘reliable’ source has said that Solange has just renewed her passport and is in final talks with Michael Jackson’s people. Well, when your Beyonce’s sister, who better to help you out from her humungous shadow than Michael Jackson? Maybe in a family tit for tat… Latoya Jackson can open up for Sasha Fierce.

JCVD DVD Review

So, 2008 was officially the year of the 80s comebacks… Robert Downey Jr, Mickey Rourke, Flannel… JCVD, an acronym for Jean Claude Van Damme became a cult hit and a film fest darling and is finally on DVD!!! What makes this movie so special is you don’t know where Jean Claude Van Damme’s real persona begins and ends as he plays himself, caught up in a Tarantino-esque bank heist situation, while dealing with a custody battle, while contending with his rival Stevan Segal who is after the same movie role he is. I lament the fact that there is no Jean Claude commentary on this badboy dvd, but that’s aiit. Can’t hate on him cuz this movie kills kills kills. Watch out for the insanely long existential monologue where he waxes poetic about life and celebrity. I like Jean Claude acting in french waaaay better than when he busts out his english steeze. This movie makes me want to put on bicycle shorts and do Tae Kwon Do kicks in the air. This movie is the muscles from Brussels comeback film, and now he’s working on BLOODSPORT 2.

Bat For Lashes Concert Review

So after killing the new TWO SUNS cd I was pretty excited to see how the songs translate into a live performance. Starting pretty promptly at 8:30 in a packed Mod Club in downtown Toronto, the show began with the song that kicks off her cd, “Glass”. It’s got slow build, but as soon as the beat dropped, a collective shiver went through many in the audience, including moi. The Toronto audiences are notorious for holding onto their cool and responding to a performance with a stoic deadpan, but miss Natasha Kahn was able to give the crowd a little pulse in some of her more energetic songs like “Pearl’s Dream” (the total Kate Bush-y track) and “Two Planets” (the Bjork-y jam). She had a kick-ass drummer, and a really cool Tori Amos-esque backup vocalist/keyboardist (holler if you record your own record), alongside a pretty solid band that filled the night with atmosphere and did justice to her hour-and-a-half set. What really struck me (other than her exposed red bra…hot) was her ability to hop around to different instruments (autoharp, piano, guitar) with equal aplomb. This was the beginning of a North American tour for Bat For Lashes, and part of me feels she was slightly restrained… either to save her voice… maybe it’s her style… maybe it’s in response to the subdued Toronto audience… but I felt she was a note or two away from fully letting loose and letting go. I’m not complaining though.. especially when I wanted to yell out MARRY ME between her songs.

Revenge of the Nerd

Andrea Wachner hated the idea of going to her 10 year highschool reunion…so much so that she hired a stripper, CRICKET, to take her place…not only that… she hired a small camera crew, used an earpiece to communicate to CRICKET, and documented the whole thing…including the Andrea clone stripping in the middle of the dance floor shocking her old classmates. You can call it revenge of the nerd. Watch this vid.

I’m gonna hire a UFC fighter to go back to my highschool reunion.
