UP Review

The trailers for this new Disney/Pixar movie never really got me. All I knew was in UP, there was an old guy, a house, a lot of balloons and some roly-poly asian kid in a Cub Scouts outfit. Compared with the other Pixar flicks with talking bugs, or old school toys, or cutesy little robots, I wasn’t too hyped up for UP. Didn’t seem high concept enough, or action packed enough, or something. I thought it was going to be boring in fact. But the guys at Pixar ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS deliver. And this film might go down as my FAVORITE flick of 2009. It’s what movie magic is all about. No wonder the hoity toity French cinephiles chose it to open Cannes (especially with Lars Von Triers ANTI-CHRIST as part of the line up), because this was old time movie making at its best. It’s easy to see Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin starring in this film. And despite the DISNEY 3-D business…the real special FX lied in the story… the relationships …the humanity. I haven’t cried this much in a movie since I was 4 and FROSTY THE SNOMAN melted. Thank god for the 3D glasses… they hide the tears. I watched the movie in a theatre filled with children and adults, and it hit all the right beats for everyone in there. Honestly… this is the bar for filmmakers. There is NO excuse for bad filmmaking (you listening there Wolverine?). People gotta UP their game. Pixar…I will never doubt you again.

Baldwin Blunder

Alec Baldwin just made about 60 million enemies by pissing off Filipinos around the word. In an interview on The Late Show with David Letterman last week Baldwin said that he would love to have more children, and was “thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point … or a Russian one.” Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla said that Baldwin’s comment was “insensitive and uncalled for” and an insult to millions of Filipinos. He went on to say, “let him try to come here in the Philippines and he’ll see mayhem,” meaning, “come visit the islands and get your ass handed to you.” All I’m saying is the Philippines is home to Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, and did you see him DESTROY Hatton? Mr. Baldwin… I suggest you get Tina Fey to help carve out that apology note. And the Russians haven’t even chimed in yet…

Wolverine Review

Watched Wolverine. Meh.

When the best part of the movie is the trailers and opening credits, you know you didn’t get your money’s worth. The movie was aiiit… good for Hugh to produce the damn thing… and I have a feeling that the next one (assuming that there will be a next one) will be better… especially if (as the rumours are saying) Logan gets to go to Japan and train with the ninjas… but this one feels like it was a production team feeling it out. Some of the effects were really bunky… and as soon as I see bad CG, I’m taken out of the story. It’s like when the pretty girl farts on a date… the illusion is shattered… and frankly …that stinks. I want to be swept away in spectacle… awed by action… but this one made me feel… meh. When action movies do the flawless FX game (Star Trek, Transformers) you gotta step your sh*t up… it’s WOLVERINE for gadssakes! He’s the most loved character in comics (after Archie), it has to be mindblowing. Sigh…betta luck next time.

STAR TREK REDUX

Ok you space geeks, firstly, a spoiler alert. DO NOT READ if you haven’t seen the movie and really want to! But if you don’t care, and you want to read some of this magic, then read on my friend. Read on.

So, J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek …the reboot… the much needed jolt to the Star Trek brand… is …pardon the extended metaphor… electrifying (said in a John Travolta from Grease kinda way). This movie rocks the socks off Spock. Great story telling, great FX, and tongue is firmly in cheek on this one. I was feeling this movie from the first minute. Kirk is great, funny, self deprecating, and gives nods to Shatner’s start and stop delivery. Spock is spocky, and Uhura is hot. The bad guy is bad, the space fights are badder, but midway I started realizing something. This new STAR TREK is not a remake of older STAR TREKS, but is really a remake of TOP GUN!!! I said it. Kirk is the maverick Tom Cruise-y character, with the renegade attitude, gifted natural ability and living in the shadow of his father. Spock is the Val Kilmer not liking Kirk because “he’s dangerous”. And the whole movie revolves around their BROMANTIC relationship. All we were missing was a Kenny Loggins tune. (if you see the movie a second time, sing DANGERZONE during the space fights… it works!!!) Bruce Greenwood… who we have had at the MuchMore environment is the Tom Skerrit-surrogate father figure… and as soon as they graduate from Starfleet Academy… they have to go fight the mother of all bogeys played by Eric Bana. Talk to me goose.

BOB VS BETTY

We love our beefs here at MuchMore. We’ve reported Rick Ross vs 50 Cent, Radiohead and Miley Cyrus, and now we talk about the oldest beef on the block…. Bob Barker and Betty White. “Reportedly” the two of them were invited to be part of the inaugural Game Show awards and Bob has threatened to pull out if Betty is to go. The feud dates back to when Bob was petitioning to have an elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo relocated to a habitat in San Andreas California, but the zoo wanted to keep the elephant and enlisted celebs like Betty to help. The zoo won. Bob lost. And the feud of feuds began. Let’s just hope they keep it off the red carpet as there’s nothing worse than seeing a screaming match where people lose their teeth.
